DHL Logistics Background

DHL is the world’s leading postal and logistics Group, Deutsche Post DHL and encompasses three divisions: DHL Express, DHL Global Forwarding, Freight and DHL Supply Chain. The company was founded by Adrian Dalsey, Larry Hillblom and Robert Lynn in 1969, starting out by shipping papers by air from San Francisco to Honolulu. They innovated by starting the customs clearance process of the cargo before the actual arrival of the ship, leading to dramatic reductions in waiting times. 

Express air delivery was born. From there, the company grew from strength to strength and expanded over the coming decades to the Far East, Middle East, Africa and Europe.

Today, DHL is the biggest third-party logistics firm in the world and is in is in a unique position because it has its own airline. DHL operates in 220 countries and has more than 275,000 employees around the globe. The company is based in Germany, but it was founded in San Francisco more than 40 years ago, the firm reported revenue of $30.7 bn in 2017 and carried almost two and a half million tons of airfreight.
